Toni Kroos scored an absolute screamer on Saturday as Real Madrid opened their La Liga season with a 3-1 win at Celta Vigo.

A day after seeing defending champions Barcelona beaten 1-0 at Athletic Bilbao, Real drew first blood in this season’s title race with an ultimately comfortable win despite the sending-off of Luka Modric.

Gareth Bale was a surprise name in the starting line-up picked by Zinedine Zidane, who said afterwards he will now stay at the club, and the Wales forward set up the opening goal for Karim Benzema with a low cross.

Celta had a goal disallowed for offside by VAR but looked to have been given a lifeline when Modric was sent off for a late tackle on Arsenal loanee Denis Suarez in the 56th minute, but Kroos doubled Real’s advantage five minutes later with a thunderous strike from 30 yards out which flew struck the underside of the bar, bounced down and then hit the roof of the net.

Lucas Vazquez added a third late on before Iker Losada scored a consolation for the hosts in stoppage time, but it’s Kroos’ strike, below, which you really need to see.
